Organizations That Offer Free Marriage Counseling

by Sabrina Summerfield on February 8, 2010

Marriage counseling can quickly become an expensive proposition. And when one member of a marriage is seriously considering ending the union, it can be difficult for them to envisage spending $100 or more an hour on something they believe they want out of. That’s one side of the coin. The other side is the couple that desperately wants help solving problems that they can’t deal with, but can’t afford the high cost of therapy. This article is a look at where one might be able to obtain free marriage counseling.

The primary source of free marriage counseling is churches. If the couple was married in a religious service, the best place to start looking for free marriage counseling is by contacting the church in which they were married. Most of these services are delivered on a pay what you can basis. Here are some of the largest groups:

Catholic Family Service is the one of the largest non-governmental family service organizations in the world. In North America Catholic Family Services delivers over twenty thousand hours of free marriage counseling every year. If you were married in the Roman Catholic Church and you are in need of marriage counseling, contact your parish office or simply look in the White Pages.

For Jewish couples, or couples in which one of the partners is Jewish, talk to your rabbi about marriage counseling through Jewish Family Services. These organizations are less centralized than there Catholic counterpart, but then again Catholicism is kind of anal about centralization, isn’t it? Jewish Family Services groups tend to offer counseling on a wide variety of topics.

ICNA stands for Islamic Circle of North America. Counseling is delivered to married couples within the context of the expectations of the Faith. Marriage counseling is delivered by the ICNA through Muslim Family Services. MSF is a division of Islamic Circle of North America Relief USA.

Other faiths also offer marriage and relationship counseling. This is not an exhaustive list by any means. Baptist congregations, Episcopalians, United and just about any other religious organization recognized by the US government offers pay what you can marriage counseling for members. The notable exception is the Church of Scientology, which charges set donations for its counseling services, frequently as high as $500 per hour.

For non-religious couples, governments also have a vested interest in stable families, or at least a vested interest in avoiding unstable families. However, social services varying wildly by jurisdiction. Obtaining free marriage counseling may be as close as the phone. Call your local department of family or social services and ask what help they might have for you. And good luck.

The Journey To Save A Marriage After An Emotional Affair

by Sabrina Summerfield on February 8, 2010

Emotional affairs can be more damaging to a relationship then an affair that involved pure sexual lust or a one night stand. The fact that the heart and deep emotions were involved often strikes the person who has been cheated on much harder than knowing the spouse just fell in bed beside someone once or a couple times. So, is it possible to actually save a marriage after an emotional affair has taken place?

It is the emotional aspect that makes this situation so unbearable. Couples move past physical affairs and one night stands rather quickly, but the knowledge that one spouse had a serious intimate connection to someone else is much harder to brush aside or talk away.

The first part of the journey lies with the spouse who actually had the affair. They must do some serious introspection to determine where their feelings truly lie. Is their heart still with this other person, or are their emotions for their spouse more intense? The emotions connected to the affair must be completely put out or at least seriously dampened if the marriage is to have a fighting chance.

If the connection of the affair has been broken, then the journey shifts focus to the other spouse.

Once the spouse that cheated has clearly stated that they want to save the marriage and are invested fully in doing so, it is up to the other spouse to open their heart and mind to that happening. They have every right to their own emotions, but in order for the union to survive they must be open to allowing trust to rebuild and new bonds to form within the couple.

Things will likely never be “normal” again after an emotional affair. Yet, if both people are actively working toward the future together then a new normalcy and an even stronger sense of happiness can come about in time. It will just require a period of time where both people work toward reconnecting, rebuilding a strong sense of trust, and becoming closer together again.

It is entirely possible to save a marriage after one person has experienced an emotional affair, but it must all start with open conversations. That doesn’t mean screaming and yelling, but genuinely talking and listening so that everyone is heard and understood. Only then will it be possible to move forward with action that makes it better.
