Online Relationships: Are They Healthy?

by Ben Cawiezell on December 25, 2009

Most of us ask this question: are online relationships healthy. While some people believe that they are, many are still in doubt about it. But there’s only one truth here: “in the flesh” and online relationships both have advantages and disadvantages .

Starting from Scratch

Healthy relationships build on a few basic blocks. You have the foundation blocks that are deep and wide and help you establish a rapport with one another. The basics are the courtship. Learning about likes and dislikes, sharing dreams, and beginning to make plans for the future are all part of this stage of the relationship. You can have them with online relationships just as you can have them with flesh and blood romances.

Engineer What you Want your Life to Become

Physical presence is always an important part of a relationship. But with online relationships, online conversations without really seeing each other in flesh is acceptable, for a while. But while the relationship becomes more intense and serious, the demand to be together will actually come in.

Show Yourself

At some point in time you’re going to have to do more than meet and say hi. Whether it’s the first kiss or something more intimate will depend on the two of you, your interests in one another, and where your comfort zone lies. You will need to move beyond talking, texting, and messaging at some point and into a real life situation where you can touch, kiss, cuddle, and hold hands.

Commit and Accept

Learn to commit and accept things. Any kind of relationship is a two-way process. Whether it’s “in the flesh” or online relationship, make sure that you are able to commit something and is willing to accept whatever comes your way. Giving more and accepting less, or giving less and accepting more is somewhat harmful for the relationship.

No one can really say whether online relationships are healthy or not. It all boils down to the willingness of the person to sacrifice to a certain extent just to maintain what they have. Know what is right and wrong in order to preserve your online relationship.
